what is a doula?
“A person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth.”
–DONA International
Research shows that childbirth does go more smoothly with a doula: labor is 25 percent shorter, the need for epidural pain relief is 60 percent less and the Caesarean section rate is reduced by half.

Doulas can also offer postpartum support for those beginning delicate days and weeks following birth, assisting the new mom with breastfeeding, newborn questions and emotional support, which allows a cushion within the transition from woman to mother–even helping with meal preparation, dishes, laundry, older siblings, etc.

I was certified in 2020 through DONA International under one of Pittsburgh’s best teachers and practicing doulas, Kathy McGrath, MSW, LSW, FACCE, CD (DONA). I began attending births immediately after completing the program and subsequently had my third child. I am a stay at home mother: I view birth and babies and child raising as a career, with eight years of experience to share with potential women as they become confident mothers in the demanding seasons of both pregnancy and postpartum.
